Stablecoins Explained

Stablecoins bridge traditional finance and crypto by pegging their value to a stable asset — usually the US dollar. They're the settlement layer for DeFi, cross-border payments, and exchange trading pairs.

Fiat-backed stablecoins

Issuers hold USD reserves (or equivalents) and mint tokens 1:1.

USDC — Circle-issued, monthly attestations, widely used in DeFi USDT — Tether, largest market cap, historically less transparent reserves

Risk: Centralized. Issuer can freeze addresses. Regulatory action can impact redemption.

Crypto-collateralized stablecoins

Over-collateralized with crypto assets. Smart contracts manage liquidation if collateral value drops.

DAI — MakerDAO's decentralized stablecoin, backed by ETH, wBTC, and other assets

Risk: Depends on oracle price feeds and liquidation mechanisms. Can de-peg during extreme market events (see March 2023 USDC/DAI stress).

Algorithmic stablecoins

Attempt to maintain peg through supply expansion/contraction without full collateral backing.

Historical lesson: UST/Luna collapse (2022) showed algorithmic designs are fragile under sustained selling pressure.

Use cases

  • Trading — park profits in stables between positions
  • Remittances — send USD value globally in minutes
  • DeFi lending — earn yield on stable deposits
  • Payroll — crypto-native companies paying in USDC

What to watch

Regulation is accelerating. MiCA in Europe, US stablecoin bills, and issuer licensing requirements will reshape which stables are available on which platforms. Choose stables with transparent reserves and regulatory clarity for long-term holdings.
